The program is enclosed. In addition to the talks, there is a poster session on Friday, August 13, at which the major laboratories have been invited to show their future plans and projects.
Contributed papers should be submitted by July 15, 1999. Instructions for doing so are on the conference website. All papers will be available on the Los Alamos preprint archive site: links to authors, titles, abstracts and text will be available on the LP99 website.
Webcast: A webcast of each talk at the conference will also be available from our website, approximately one day after the presentation.
Transparencies on the Web: Copies of the transparencies from the talks will be available on the conference website following the live presentations.
Proceedings: The written proceedings of the symposium will be posted on the LP99 website. Each delegate will receive a printed copy of the Proceedings (included in the registration fee).

Registration will take place adjacent to Kresge Auditorium. All delegates must register. There will be a welcome reception in nearby Crocker Garden on Sunday afternoon, August 8. Please register on Sunday if at all possible, to avoid a Monday morning crowd. If you arrive later during the week, you may register during the times listed below.

Monday, August 9, 6:30 - 9:00 PM: Stanford Welcome Reception at the Rodin Garden and a tour of the newly renovated Cantor Center for Visual Arts (formerly the Stanford Museum).
Tuesday, August 10, 7:00 PM: Performance by Chanticleer, an a cappella ensemble at the Stanford Memorial Church.
Wednesday, August 11, 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM: Full Day Excursion to Napa Valley Wineries, hiking in Marin County, or exploring San Francisco. Capacity is limited on the Napa Valley and Marin Hiking tours, so delegates are encouraged to make reservations early.
Excursion Day Bus Schedule:
Wine Country Tour: Buses will leave directly from symposium hotels and Lagunita Dorms at 8:30 AM.
Marin Country Hike: Buses will leave directly from symposium hotels and Lagunita for the long hike at 9:30 AM. Buses will leave for the shorter hike at 10:30AM.
San Francisco: Buses will leave from symposium hotels and Lagunita for San Francisco at 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
Wednesday, August 11, 5:30 - 9:30 PM: Symposium banquet: Hornblower Dinner Cruise around San Francisco bay. The excursion includes transportation to the Banquet. Buses will leave Palo Alto at 4:00 PM in front of Lagunita, for those who wish to attend the Banquet Cruise only.
Friday, August 13, 2:00 - 9:00 PM: Friday afternoon will be devoted to tours of the SLAC research facilities and the Poster Session. Dedication ceremonies for the BaBar Detector will take place early in the afternoon. A barbecue dinner will be served in conjunction with the tours, informal discussion, and poster session.
Companions are welcome to join in program events. There are fees for companions wishing to attend the Chanticleer Concert ($20), Dinner Cruise ($70), and Western BBQ ($20).
Monday, August 9, 10:00 AM: Informational meeting and continental breakfast at Lagunita Student Residence. We'll review plans for the week, meet each other, and sign up for activities.
Tuesday, August 10, 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM: Bus trip to Roaring Camp and Big Trees Railroad in the heart of a redwood forest.
Thursday, August 12, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM: A chaperoned trip to Great America Amusement Park for children over age 10. In the afternoon, bus transportation to the San Jose Art Museum, the Discovery Museum, or the Tech Museum of Innovation.
Friday, August 13, 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM: A bus trip to the Monterey Peninsula including the 17 mile drive and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
Saturday, August 14, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM: Grey Line bus tour of San Francisco, including a cable car ride.
A detailed description of the outings, including their costs, and a sign-up form, is follows.

Tuesday, August 10: Visit the frontier town of Roaring Camp and the Big Trees Narrow Gauge Railroad. Travel 45 minutes by excursion bus to a location deep in the heart of the magnificent redwood forests of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Arrive in time to catch the 11:00 AM departure of the 1880’s steam train and enjoy an hour-long tour through the mountains. Passengers may detrain to picnic, returning to Roaring Camp on a later train. Or upon arrival, you can grab your deluxe box lunch and go for a stroll through the redwood loop trail. This trail is just a short distance from the depot and there are plenty of picnic sites along the way. Have lunch in the shade of a 2,000 year-old redwood. Return from your picnic in time to catch the 12:15 train. Enjoy a rare opportunity to ride back in the pages of history through some beautiful scenery in the American West. Thursday, August 12: A chaperoned trip designed for children 10 years and older to the Great America theme park. Your children will experience heart-pounding thrill rides, dazzling stage shows, and cuddle up to some of their favorite cartoon characters. Great America is only a half-hour away by minivan. It’s 100 acres of magic, laughter, music, screams, and dreams come true. See: www.pgathrills.com.
While the older children and teenagers are at the theme park, we have scheduled a bus trip to some special local museums suitable for adults and children of all ages. An excursion bus will travel 30 miles south to stop at the San Jose Art Museum. See: www.sjmusart.org. Or stay on the bus and get off at the Children’s Discovery Museum. For children to age 13, the museum offers interactive exhibits and programs that span the arts, science, technology, and the humanities. See: www.cdm.org. The last stop will be at the Tech Museum of Innovation; a new hands-on technology museum devoted to inspiring innovation in everyone. See: www.thetech.org. The bus will circle around to pick you up at the end of your visit, but there will probably be only enough time to visit one of the museums. Each museum has a café with reasonably priced food and beverages.
Friday, August 13: Your daylong tour begins as your bus drives south through the Salinas Valley, the "artichoke capital of the world," and through Monterey to Steinbeck's Cannery Row. Visit the world-acclaimed Monterey Bay Aquarium (admission included). (See: www.mbayaq.org.) You will view exhibits like nothing you have ever experienced: a million-gallon indoor ocean, viewed through the largest window on earth, and see eye-to-eye with more than 300,000 strange and colorful marine creatures. Enjoy time on your own for lunch and shopping in the Cannery Row area. Rejoin the bus and follow the coast through Pacific Grove to 17-Mile Drive where you will visit Pebble Beach, and the legendary 200 to 300 year old Lone Cypress. As the road approaches the coast, turbulent surf, twisted cypress trees and herds of sunbathing sea lions swing into view. Fanshell Beach is a popular place to stop, and you will have a chance to stroll along the Pacific Ocean. As you continue, you’ll see families of deer mingling with golfers on the famous fairways. On your way back, you will pass by one of the oldest Spanish Missions in the country, the Carmel Mission. Return to Stanford via route 101 through San Jose and the Silicon Valley - the Computer Capital of the World.
Saturday, August 14: Visit and shop in San Francisco. Your bus will take you to all the sightseeing stops in the morning and to Fisherman’s Wharf for lunch (not included). In the afternoon the bus will take you downtown where you can board a cable car or do some shopping at nearby department stores (Nordstrom’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Neiman Marcus are nearby).

About Stanford: Stanford University is located 60 km South of San Francisco, on a peninsula bounded by the Pacific Ocean on the west and San Francisco Bay on the east. The campus extends over an area of more than 3000 hectares, with ample open space and facilities for sports and recreation. The climate is moderately warm and dry during the summer. In August, typical temperatures range from 25 C to 30 C during the day and often dropping to 15 C or less in the course of the evening.
Directions from Freeways: If approaching Palo Alto from Highway 101, exit on Embarcadero Road (West). Consult the enclosed maps of SLAC and Palo Alto for conference rooms, dorms, and hotel locations. If approaching Palo Alto from Highway 280, exit on Sand Hill Road (East). SLAC is located on the right side of Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park. To reach Palo Alto/Stanford, consult the enclosed area map. Please note: The Stanford University campus is very large. It is strongly recommended that you be dropped off as closely as possible to the housing residence you are staying at. SLAC is three miles west of the main campus. Bring a sweater or light jacket for evening events.
Parking: For participants staying at the Stanford residences, all facilities are within walking distance. Services including banking and light dining are available at Tressider Union. For delegates electing to stay at off-campus conference hotels, daily shuttle transportation will be provided to and from Kresge Auditorium. For those making their own arrangements, parking spaces for visitors are very limited on Campus and are located at peripheral locations. Parking permits are required on campus and may be purchased at the Registration Desk at a cost of $2.00/day and one-month permits (7-30 days) are $13.00 each. Permits are only valid in designated "C" and resident parking lots. Permits are not valid in areas designated "A" or "Resident Fellow," or at parking meters.
Special Needs: You may contact the Conference Coordinator if you require special assistance during the symposium (i.e. dietary restrictions, assistance for those with disabilities).

Check-In at Lagunita Court Student Residence: On Saturday, August 7, check-in will be from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Sunday, August 8, check-in times will be from 10:00 AM to 9:00PM. Check-out time is 12:00 noon. A $70 key deposit is required for each set of keys distributed upon arrival at check-in and will be refunded when the keys are returned at check-out time. A staff member, called a Night Assistant, is on duty after the Residence Office closes. The Night Assistant may be reached by calling the number posted outside Lagunita. Please contact the night assistant in the event of a lock-out or a late check-in.
Conference ID Cards and Welcome Information: Conference ID cards and welcome information are available free of charge for individuals at check-in. The welcome information describes services available on the Stanford Campus and at Lagunita Campus Dorms.
