Root vs JAS in LCD
JAS was not viable when LCD started
- has made great strides in past year (partly with LCD as motivation)
Friendly competition over past year in parallel developments in Root & JAS
new users appear to prefer JAS (so far)
- slick GUI
- compared to macros
- better recovery from errors
- client/server model
- immediate access to remote data
- easier to code in Java
- faster turnaround than C++ apps
- perceived as language of future
- excellent language doc available on web

So far, they are willing to put up with downsides
- awkward printing of plots
- home-made fitting package
- user I/O is difficult (no interface for it in JAS yet)
