Summary:

I have over 20 years of experience working within the field of experimental subatomic particle physics (a.k.a. "High Energy Physics"). Throughout my career my focus has been on the design, management and implementation of large-scale software projects, especially involving large scale data analysis (data mining) and data storage.

Another important aspect of my work has involved communication within large international physics collaborations, and in this capacity I became involved very early with the WWW project led by Tim Berners-Lee at CERN. I worked on the first web server in the US (at SLAC) and developed an early web browser (Midas) that helped inspire Mark Andreeson to develop Mosaic (and later Netscape). I have given many talks on the WWW, was on the organizing committee for the seventh international WWW committee, and was selected as one of the 100 most influential people on Silicon Valley by Microtimes magazine (don't ask me to justify that last one!).

Strengths:

  • Wide ranging detailed technical experience with programming (in many languages,   including Java, C, C++, Perl, Rexx, Fortran, ASP, CGI),  internet/WWW and large scale data storage and analysis.
  • Skilled in managing large, dispersed, computing projects.

Summary of Computing Experience:

  • Designed, developed and maintained a range of large scale scientific data analysis applications including:

    • Java Analysis Studio (JAS) – A client-server distributed data analysis system written in Java.

    • MIDAS – Motif based interactive data analysis shell – X/Motif based data analysis system.

    • JAZELLE – A data management system for handling large (multi Tera-byte) scientific data sets.

    • DUCS – A distributed code management system.

  • Managed large scale distributed collaborations of physicists on scientific computing projects.

  • Managed computing professionals and students (physics and CS, graduate and undergrad) on a variety of projects.

  • Expertise with a range of languages including Java, C, C++, Perl, Rexx, Fortran, ASP, CGI.

  • Extensive experience with graphics systems including X, Motif, Java.

  • 4 years of experience with Java including AWT, Swing, JDBC, RMI, Sockets, IO etc.

Summary of Internet/WWW experience:

  • Worked on web since meeting Tim Berners-Lee in 1992.
  • Involved in setting up first web server in US.
  • Implemented one of the first database interfaces on the web
  • Developed Midas web browser (progenitor to Mosaic, which led to development of Netscape).
  • Participated in early meetings for web development (when only 30 people attended web meetings)
  • Served on local organizing committee for WWW 7 conference in Santa Clara
  • Named as one of 100 most influential people in the Silicon Valley by Microtimes
  • Developed numerous commercial and academic web sites using a variety of techniques.

Summary of Physics Experience

  • Member of European Muon Collaboration (EMC), CERN, (1980 - 1984)
  • Member of Anomalous Single Photon (ASP) experiment , SLAC, (1984 -1987)
  • Member of SLD experiment, SLAC, (1984 - present)

Employment History:

  • Stanford Linear Accelerator Center - Staff Physicist (August 1993 - Present
  • Boston University - Research Assistant Professor (January 1989 - July 1993)
  • Boston University - Senior Research Associate (January 1986 - December 1988)
  • MIT - PostDoctoral Research Assistant (March 1984 - December 1985)

Education

  • St. Catherine’s College, Oxford University, England. (1980 1984)
    • Doctorate: D.Phil. — Nuclear Physics
  • Entrance Scholarship to Churchill College, Cambridge University, England. (19771980)
    • Bachelors Degree: B.A.(Hons.) — Physics
    • Masters Degree: M.A.
  • Trinity School of John Whitgift, Croydon, England. (1969 - 1976)
