Record Breaking Year at the SLCIt has been a record breaking year of running at the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC). After breaking the 10,000 Z/week barrier at the end of October the SLC has continued to average 10,000 Z/week for the rest of the year, and as of last weekend has delivered over 100,000 Z events to the SLD detector. More records fell this weekend with 1200 Z's delivered in one 8 hour shift, and a sustained luminosity of 200 Z/hr for a short (half hour) period. 3000 Z's in one day were delivered just before shutdown for the Christmas break. The Collaboration's optimism is high for a very successful continuation of the run during the first 5 months of next year.
This success was achieved by the concerted efforts of a large group of people, including the SLC operators, the accelerator physicists who have managed to continuously raise the luminosity delivered by the machine so that it routinely delivers 100-120 Z events/hour, and the many technicians who maintain the delicate accelerator systems.

This plot shows the number of Z events reconstructed in the SLD detector each week, as well as the integrated number for the 92-97 run. |
