Analyzing a Canned Dataset

This tutorial leads you through getting a dataset from the Penn repository and then using a canned Root analysis macro to create and fill some histograms.

It is assumed that you have Root installed and the $ROOTSYS variable points to it. Also, PATH must contain a reference to $ROOTSYS/bin. You must also have installed the Event classes shared library.

• Get the 10 GeV pion dataset (e10Large90.root 2.5 MB) from the repository.

• Get the analysis macro, electron.c

• edit the macro
  • change the TFile line to reference the file spec of where you put the root file

  • change the gSystem line to reference the Event class shared library

• fire up Root & execute the macro

  • .x electron.c

• look at histograms, eg
  • eEM->Draw(); (don't worry, the energy scales haven't been optimized!)

You can edit and rerun the macro as often as you like. It takes about 30 seconds on a 400 MHz W98 P2 to process the 500 events.
